“Enroll in one, study in all”

Q&A

1

Q:Do students usually live in university housing after their first year, if not where do they live?

A: A good number of students do live in university housing after their first year. For sophomore students you’re basically guaranteed on campus housing because you were in on campus housing during your freshmen year 99.9% of our students live in on campus as a freshmen so housing as a sophomore is all but guaranteed. After that, we see students move away from the residence halls, but still living close to campus for any number of reasons, sometimes it’s about friend groups that develop, sometimes it about wanting to be more in proximity of a particular part of campus, or their academic classroom setting, like where the core of their classes might be. It may also be because of a number of personal reasons but again students do remain in university housing after their freshmen year actually at a rate of more than 50% so I would say it’s significant. There are students who live on campus all four years, after the second year it’s a lottery system, and sometimes students will get campus housing but they won’t be able to live with all of their friends so they choose to live off campus.

Q: How does Cornell interact with the community around them?

A: So Cornell has launched, a number of years ago, an initiative called Engaged Cornell, which is an office on campus that helps students to locate meaningful internship and service learning activities that can happen in the larger Cornell community, it can happen elsewhere in the United States and to some extent around the world, so helping students to move outside of the campus to engage with real life activities is part of Cornell’s core values. For international students, there’s also a chance to come, once you’ve been accepted to Cornell, to come to the campus a week early and learn, it’s called the Prepare Program, and it gives you some community involvement and helps you acclimate to the local community.

Q: What TOEFL score is required?

A: The TOEFL is required if English is not your first language, and we have a minimum TOEFL score of 100. If you get 100, you’re able to move on 100 or higher, you can certainly move on, you don’t have to worry about getting the highest possible score on the TOEFL, just because that’s not necessarily something we’re concerned with but do your best to get the highest score you can get, if it’s more than 100 you’re able to move on to the rest of the application which is certainly far more important.

Q: International student communities at Cornell?

A: We mentioned the student organizations earlier, and I think that is the one way that we have lots of different student communities here, international student communities certainly. We have the Caribbean students association, we have the Chinese students association, so we have a lot of different national organizations that allow students to have things in common. Very specific things in common, culture, family, those kinds of things to come together while you’re on a campus like this where really the greater opportunities, the greater desire, is that you be exposed to things that you’re not necessarily as familiar with. That is really what the experience is meant to be at a place that is a deep and broad as Cornell. And a lot of those national student associations are involved around some aspect of their culture that they would like to share for instance an earlier slide of Indian students was the Bhangra club, so it’s Indian dance. There’s a Korean drumming club, and lots of other clubs like that and a lot of the national or ethnic student clubs do like to get together with other student clubs and organizations. I used to be the faculty advisor to the Cornell Ukrainian club, and they got together with a lot of other clubs and did a “Dumplings of the World”. They made pierogi’s, and Chinese students made dumplings, and the Italian club made ravioli.

Q: Benefits of a liberal arts education

A: Liberal arts is really embedded, it’s the beginning, middle and end of the experience here. Liberal arts is really just learning across different disciplines, exposure, not just doing one single thing but doing a lot of different things in terms of reading, writing, learning, conversation discussion. Thinking about how seemingly separate things will come together and interact and affect each other. I think liberal arts is more the way people think and act and are in the world today than they want to give it credit for. A liberal arts education fosters creativity. Creativity, innovative thinking, and that’s really been the hallmark of what’s driven the American economy, is a lot of creativity and innovative thinking. And so actually it was back in the 1930s that our Department of Education started requiring students to take a number of liberal arts courses no matter what they were studying. Whether they were studying engineering or architecture or just the sciences, or design. Everyone must take a certain number of liberal arts courses, and what I think the value of a liberal arts education is is that it does foster this incredible creativity, it’s not to disrespect our other fine colleges at Cornell, but sometimes pre-professional education can seem like training, you have to take this number of steps, and everybody’s learning the same thing and where does the innovation come from? I had the opportunity to visit India a couple years ago on a Fulbright grant from our government and one of the educational innovations they showcased was the creation of liberal arts colleges in India. And this is a very recent development from a number of very wealthy entrepreneurs, these are privately funded, but they did it because India has some of the best technical education in the world, the IITs, these are incredibly competitive technical institutions, but all of these people who have made a lot of money felt that that kind of education wasn’t graduating the kind of innovative thinkers who really make those big leaps and that comes from American style liberal arts education. And I firmly believe that no matter what you do, you will be better served by having exposure to that, so everyone should apply to the College of Arts and Sciences.
