History:
(Bizarre Adventures I#27 (fb) - BTS) - Sara Grey met, fell in love with and married Paul Bailey. They eventually had two children: Gailyn and Joey (see comments). Seeing as her sister Jean was a mutant, Sara wondered if Joey or Sara might be similarly afflicted.

(Uncanny X-Men I#136 (fb) - BTS) - Confronted by Jean who had lost all control over her powers as Dark Phoenix (actually a cosmic entity posing as Jean), Sara once again felt afraid her children might one day turn out like the Dark Phoenix.

(X-Factor I#12 - BTS) - Because of their mother's pro-mutant stance, which led to the Grey's being targeted by anti-mutant groups, Gailyn and Joseph were forced to go into hiding with Sara (see comments).

(X-Factor I#35 (fb) - BTS) - Gailyn and Joseph were captured by Nanny and the Orphan Maker (see comments), who brainwashed them using the mind-altering Pixie Dust (a chemical that rendered others more susceptible to Nanny's low-level telepathic abilities). As a result, Joey and Gailyn joined Nanny's crusade to help save children as Shatter-Box, the latest member of Nanny's Lost Boys (and Girls).

(X-Factor I#35) - While looking for Scott's son Christopher at a secret facility beneath an orphanage, Jean and Scott were attacked by Nanny and her Lost Boys (and Girls). Immediately sensing Shatter-Box was actually her niece and nephew, Jean angrily demanded Nanny tell her how they came to be in her possession. Nanny told Jean that Joey and Gailyn were orphans like all the others, causing Jean to fear Sara had indeed perished. Nanny and Orphan Maker managed to escape after their fight, but not before Jean could unmask the female member of Shatter-Box to reveal her as Gailyn. However, with Scott's child being in more immediate danger, Jean allowed Gailyn and Joseph to leave with Nanny (presumably a lesser threat than the demon N'astirh).

(X-Factor I#40 - BTS) - After the events that became known as Inferno, Jean and the other members of X-Factor returned to their ship to be greeted by her parents. When John and Elaine Grey asked if they'd learned learned anything about Sara's whereabouts, Scott promised that finding their grandchildren would be their top priority.

(X-Factor I#40) - Not too long after that, Nanny (along with Orphan Maker) hijacked the X-Factor's plane in mid-flight just as the team was en route to return all the babies they'd saved during the Inferno crisis. Nanny and the Orphan Maker planned to take the little ones to "rescue" them, but proved to be no match for the combined efforts of X-Factor, who defeated them with relative ease. Although not able to fully read Nanny's mind, Jean followed her instincts and managed to find out where Nanny was keeping her niece and nephew. After rescuing them, Jean asked the children what had happened to their mother, Sara. Still under Nanny's influence, Gailyn and Joey responded by saying they didn't have or need a mother, but Jean threatened to take Nanny apart bolt by bolt if she wouldn't return the children to their right minds. As X-Factor tried to free the other captured mutants from Nanny's ship, Freedom Force barged in. The fact that some of the parents of the missing children had already been located through the FBI gave Jean and her parents hope that Sara (and Paul) might still be alive. John and Elaine Grey then assumed custody of Gailyn and Joey.

(X-Men II#30) - Gailyn and Joey attended the wedding of their aunt Jean Grey and Scott Summers.

(X-Men Wedding Album) - Gailyn and Joey left a video message, filmed by Shadowcat, in which they congratulated the newlyweds, though Joey asked when he could finally take his tie off.

(X-Men II#46 - BTS) - Jean went out shopping for a gift for Gailyn and Joey's upcoming birthday. She looked through a ton of children books but found it impossible to make up her mind.

(X-Men II#51) - While visiting John and Elaine Grey, Scott tried testing Gailyn and Joey for any signs of psychic powers, using simple guessing games like "pick the hand I'm holding a coin in." This annoyed Jean, who felt they should enjoy their childhood as long as possible.

(X-Men vs Brood: Day of Wrath#1 - BTS) - Jean and Scott took Jean's parents, John and Elaine, and their niece and nephew, Gailyn and Joey, on a holiday to see the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

(X-Men vs Brood: Day of Wrath#1) - In the middle of the night while sleeping in a motel in Sedona, Arizona Jean abruptly woke up as she sensed the Brood Empress had sent her Firstborn to Earth; before she and Scott undertook action, Jean telepathically checked in on her family to see them blissfully asleep. Thinking them safe, Jean and Scott left the hotel to deal with the crisis on hand.

(X-Man#30 (fb) - BTS) - During Operation: Zero Tolerance, Bastion considered it necessary to eradicate the Grey bloodline, figuring it posed too great a treat to the future of mankind if left unchecked. As such, he planned to murder Gailyn and Joey, but Cable learned of his intent and took steps to keep his cousins safe. He psi-warned John and Elaine Grey, insisting they get Gailyn and Joey out of the house before Bastion could strike. Figuring someone had to protect the children, Cable sent John and the children to stay with Nate Grey (his Earth-295 counterpart) in the New York borough known as Soho (South of Houston). However, the immensely powerful Nate Grey was having trouble controlling his powers following a recent near death experience that had left him with a bad fever.

(X-Man#30) - Due to his fever, Nate was unable to attend to John, Gailyn and Joey who (following Cable's instructions), arrived at Nate's apartment to find it empty. With no one to protect them, they were easily located and attacked by Bastion's Prime Sentinels. While John tried to hold them off, Nate's friend Roust hid Gailyn and Joey in a place that generated enough interference to block out the Prime Sentinels' electronic scanning ability. Having tracked them down with his telepathy, Nate grabbed Gailyn, Joey, and Roust and fled from the building. While hiding at a local wharf, still suffering from the fever, Nate considered his options. He briefly entertained the notion of smuggling the children to Muir Island, but was distracted by Joey, who was cracking under the pressure. Nate used the last of his powers to calm Joey down, by telepathically creating the illusion of Joey's favorite teddy bear that the boy had lost. Just then, the Prime Sentinels caught up with them, firing energy blasts to kill the Greys on sight. Nate however used his telekinetic shields to safeguard himself and the children while escaping with them before the smoke cleared. Bastion believed he had succeeded in his mission and recalled the Prime Sentinels, making it safe for Gailyn and Joey to be reunited with their grandparents.

(Uncanny X-Men I#468 (fb) - BTS) - Gailyn and Joey's aunt Julia and great uncle Brian took custody of them.

(Uncanny X-Men I#467-468) - While visiting their grandparents to meet their alternate reality niece Rachel Grey, the entire Grey family was attacked and massacred by the Shi'ar Death Commando's, amongst them Gailyn and Joey; only Rachel survived the assault.

    If there's one lesson we can learn from the mess that is Joey and Gailyn: try to avoid being an underage member of the Grey family; things generally don't tend to work out for you. The entire BTS-history of Sara and her children is such a convoluted mess, you're tempted to leave out the "T." So many unanswered questions: where did Sara take the kids? When was she kidnapped by the Phalanx? Why weren't the kids taken too? Who took care of them between their mom's disappearance and Nanny showing up to recruit them? Where is their father in all this? (Although, it's possible Paul and Sara were still together when she got "recruited" by the Phalanx, leaving Paul a single parent until Nanny and Orphan Maker got a hold of them... And he isn't called that for nothing, after all).

    So why did Jean's parents lose custody over their grandchildren? Again, no explanation is given but it might have something to do with the events of Operation: Zero Tolerance. Joey and Gailyn only survived because, as far as the Greys knew, government officials considered them dead. The best way to maintain that illusion is have them live someplace else.

    Sara's children's official names were Gailyn and Joseph, or Joey as he was often called, however, Sara called her own son Tommy in Bizarre Adventures#27. Gailyn and Joey's last name were first revealed in 1997's X-Man#30.
