Anthony Name Meaning

A classic choice with mysterious origins, Anthony has been a U.S. baby name staple since records started tracking them back in 1900. Similar to James and John, he’s a common name but has the added appeal of not being too overused. A derivative of the Greek Antonius, Anthony’s meaning is unknown.

Anthony has a mesmerizing history dotted with interesting characters from the ancient general Mark Antony to acclaimed actor Anthony Hopkins. He’s also a saint name, with Saint Anthony the patron saint of lost and stolen items. He was a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi and is still admired for his incredible sermons and words to this day.

While Latin in his roots, Anthony is most strongly tied with Italian communities in America where his nickname Tony reigns supreme. Also spelled Antony, he also has several variants around the world including Antonio, Anton, and Antoine. He also has a stunning female version in Antonia.

Anthony is inherently romantic, a rare quality in a male moniker. While he’s undoubtedly strong, he has a soft side to him that he isn’t afraid to show. The name of many poets and authors, perhaps a little Anthony is destined to have a way with words.
