Evolve! What Do You Like? ESL English Speaking and Writing Activities

This resource practices “What ____ do you like?” questions and answers through three 10-20 minute engaging speaking activities with minimum preparation required.

Evolve provides a fantastic opportunity for students to communicate their thoughts and opinions to each other through an exciting race to become champion. This double-sided worksheet incorporates engaging speaking and writing activities that can be adapted to any yes/no question-based grammar structure with the editable templates included.

Janken Questions is a great 10 minute warm-up/review speaking activity that gets students moving around and interacting with their peers.

Full instructions for all 3 activities are provided, with additional detailed warm-up/repetition ideas along with supplementary A4 flash cards. The worksheets come with full color and monochrome variations and no preparation is required outside of printing. Editable PowerPoint templates are also included for you to design your own questions.

This resource was designed for Assistant (English) Language Teachers (ALTs) in Japan as well as ESL classes around the world. It is aimed towards elementary school 5th and 6th grade/junior high school 1st grade with the intent of maximizing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, with a particular emphasis on speaking/listening through a range of fun activities.

How to use:

This activity has been used in my own classes to great success and has allowed the students to understand the target phrases/vocabulary and use them in fun and engaging ways.

The lesson plan provides a detailed step-by-step guide on how to run the lesson as well as several alternative warm-up activities that can be adapted to suit the needs of any class. It can be used with a handful of students or a full class and minimal preparation is required. The rules can also be easily adapted to fit the needs and time constraints of your class
