The match got off to a kicking start, with 12-year-old Ryan Hayward leading the coin toss.
Ryan was continuing a legacy of going to every Hawthorn game – something he shared with his father Andrew, who recently died.
Ryan has been a Hawks member for seven years, while his dad was a member for 12.
Walking onto the field accompanied by the match umpires, Ryan said it was a great experience to have.
“It was a really fun and very loud,” he said.
“I got to meet the captains from both teams.
“I was really excited.
“I just hope Hawthorn wins.”
Ryan watched the game with his family from the Carlton Draught stand.
His mum Naomi said it looked like there were plenty of people in the crowds and that Ryan had really enjoyed the experience.
“He couldn’t stop smiling,” she said.
“He had a really good time. We are sitting right behind the goal posts so we certainly have a really great view.”
UTAS Stadium venue manager Robert Groenewegen said it was a terrific night for anyone with a love of football and said the stadium had never looked better.
“It is just really great to have a game and get into that fun footy feeling again,” he said.
“There is a terrific atmosphere here and the grounds look great.
“Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.
“It’s a great event and it is great to see people supporting it.”
On Sunday, the Hawks will also host a free family picnic day at UTAS Stadium, from 11am to 2pm, with opportunities to meet players, buy merchandise and have it signed.
