Just a Couple of Days Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

Cult favorite, Tony Vigorito's award-winning underground hit is a chronicle of the party at the end of time. A game of graffiti tag on a local overpass is kicked off by a mischievous artist who writes a simple phrase: "Uh-oh." An anonymous interlocutor responds with "When?" A sly answer appears: "Just a couple of days." But what happens in just a couple of days? Professor Blip Korterly is arrested, his friend Dr. Flake Fountain is drafted into a shadow-government research project to develop the ultimate biological weapon, and an accidental outbreak turns into a merry-hearted, babble-inducing apocalypse that will either destroy humankind or take it to the next step in evolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wild trip and lots to think about

I read this book in just a couple of days. It was recommended to me by Amazon. I got it because I like to read some other authors and was looking for some additional humor/sci fi reading. This was amazing. It is funny but also leaves one with some serious questions to think about. I might say that it was one of the more disturbing books that I have read. That was due to some of the themes that the book centered around. It really made me think, while, I was at the same time laughing my way through it. If you like books that make you wonder what ethics science should follow, this is the book for you. Also, if you like Douglas Adams or Christopher Moore, I suspect you will enjoy the quirky characters and quotes as well as some of the wild turns that this book takes. I hope that Tony Vigorito continues to write books like this! I want more books that I can't put down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny story, good plot, interesting characters...

If you like Tom Robbins, then I think you'll enjoy this book. At times, the author is a bit self-indulgent with his verbosity (he even acknowledges that in the book itself), but it's a funny story with a good plot and interesting characters. After reading this I ordered another book by the same author: Nine Kinds of Naked. I'll review that one when I finish it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Heavy on pontification, light on actual story.

This book was a bit disappointing. The concept was great, but the author kept digressing, more and more into philosophical asides. If I wanted more of that, I would have selected a book on philosophy. I wouldn't have minded if there wasn't so MUCH of it, but there was. This is just my opinion, and someone else might have loved all the heavy-handed meandering, but I did not enjoy it as much as I would have with more actual story. YMMV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Good for me

I know you want to know if you will like this book...

That's hard for me to say, or guess. Language does not allow ample symbolism to convey the true meaning of the symbols it hopes to address. It's all a guess at what we hope to experience.

"Pat your head, rub your belly, and beat on your chest and roar!" This book invites participation.

I intend to read everything Vigorito writes. You should too. If you hate it, keep it to yourself, because others will know that you don't get the joke. Wouldn't that be sad.

This book is fun, non-linear, intelligent and stupid -- all at the same time and in alternating pulses. It uses science in the fictional sense, genes, jeans and beans. You get to decide what is most important, but the author does give a few hints.

Read it, you will enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars High Concept & Honed Celebration of Playful Phrasings

A wry novel about the end of verbal communication that itself revels in fun with words and arrangements of words and also mentions itself. Sometimes just reading a few paragraphs was plenty to think about. Like a less terse Vonnegut. To quote the book: "You who are reading these words, this story is for you."

5.0 out of 5 stars First book I've bought form this Author.

This book I could not put down, it was an absolute tie between the immersive story and my OCD to start a new chapter when it's right there on the next page, not sure if that makes sense but if you buy the book you might understand that part. The little intermissions were just an added bonus. While going through all of my products I've purchased to review before even writing this, just seeing the cover picture, I went to pick it up to start reading it again. I will absolutely read this book again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Skip this! There are way better books in this genre.

I believe the author aimed to a write a new age, self-help book, and force it inside a semi-intriguing story about a genetic virus being unleashed on a town. I kept reading, hoping that all the meandering non-sequiturs, pointless flashbacks, and ponderous, magical musings, would somehow be sewn up at the end, revealing some grand “a-ha moment”. That never happened. It’s so disjointed and so heavy with unimpressive linguistic gymnastics, that it made me angry! Maybe his other books are genius? This one I cannot recommend in any way.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ghastly characters and a tedious read
Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020

I was captivated by the exchange of graffiti messages at the beginning, What could they mean? Apparently nothing. I wasn't able to get through the last chapter, so perhaps there's something there that ties it to the beginning. Otherwise, it's just a cheap ploy, and hardly worthy of naming the entire book after it.

I found the characters thoroughly repugnant and the story endlessly tedious. I am loathe to give up on a book, especially after slogging to the last chapter, but if I had to read "Why aren't apples called 'reds'?" one more time, I think my head would have exploded. Why the author felt the need to repeat that over and over is beyond me. Perhaps he's amused by exploding heads.

I really wanted to like this book, despite the bait-and-switch on the story line, and the ghastly characters. But I just couldn't.
