Damping is the tendency of vibrations to die down, as the energy is converted into heat.

Example of low damping: A steel structure with tight bolt connections.

Example of high damping: A plastic material, or a structure with loose connections.

Damping determines the magnitude of resonant vibrations, for example Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV).

How to inrease the damping?

Damping can be increased by adding a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD).
