1 The Prayer of Intercession

2 The Prayer of Intercession
Intercession is the act of going to God on behalf of another or others.

3 Why Should We Intercede?
1. God commands it. 2. By doing so we invite God to act in the lives of others. 3. By doing so we empower the saints. 4. By doing so we improve society. 5. By doing so we follow the example of Jesus.

4

8 Matthew 5:44 44 “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

14 Romans 10:1 1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.

15

16 How Should We Intercede?
1. See another’s needs.

17 Proverbs 20:12 12 The hearing ear and the seeing eye, The Lord has made them both.

18 Proverbs 21:13 13 Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be heard.

19 Proverbs 28:27 27 He who gives to the poor will not lack, But he who hides his eyes will have many curses.

20 Mark 6:34 34 And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.

21 How Should We Intercede?
1. See another’s needs. 2. Identify with that person’s needs.

22 Romans 12:15 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

23 2 Corinthians 11:28,29 28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?

24 Mark 9:21,22 21 So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

25 How Should We Intercede?
1. See another’s needs. 2. Identify with that person’s needs. 3. Carry that person’s needs to God in prayer.

26 Galatians 6:2 2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

27 Ephesians 3:20,21 20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

28 Matthew 8:5-8 5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.” 7 And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.”

29 Matthew 8:9-10 9 “For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!”

31 What Should We Ask for Others?

32 Luke 2:52 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

33 What Should We Ask for Others?
1. We ask God to bless them intellectually. Governmental leaders: wisdom

34 Proverbs 20:28 28 Mercy and truth preserve the king, And by lovingkindness he upholds his throne.

35 Proverbs 29:14 14 The king who judges the poor with truth, His throne will be established forever.

36 Ecclesiastes 4:13 13 Better a poor and wise youth Than an old and foolish king who will be admonished no more.

37 1 Timothy 2:1,2 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.

38 Micah 6:8 8 “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”

39 Micah 6:8 8 “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”

40 Micah 6:8 8 “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”

41 What Should We Ask for Others?
1. We ask God to bless them intellectually. a. Governmental leaders: wisdom (1) "Do justly"--make decisions fairly and impartially. (2) "Love mercy"--have humane compassion for those they govern. (3) "Walk humbly"--serve the people with meekness.

42 What Should We Ask for Others?
1. We ask God to bless them intellectually. a. Governmental leaders: wisdom b. Fellow Christians: knowledge in three areas

43 Colossians 1:9-10 9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

44 What Should We Ask for Others?
1. We ask God to bless them intellectually. a. Governmental leaders: wisdom b. Fellow Christians: knowledge in three areas (1) Knowledge of the Lord's will (2) Knowledge in all spiritual wisdom (how to apply His will) (3) Knowledge in all spiritual understanding (how to see each situation from God's point of view)

45 What Should We Ask for Others?
2. We ask God to bless them physically.

46 3 John 2 2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

47 What Should We Ask for Others?
2. We ask God to bless them physically. a. Protection in travel

48 Ezra 8:21 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions.

49 Ezra 8:22,23 22 For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.” 23 So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer.

50 Ezra 8:31,32 31 Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. And the hand of our God was upon us, and He delivered us from the hand of the enemy and from ambush along the road. 32 So we came to Jerusalem, and stayed there three days.

51 What Should We Ask for Others?
2. We ask God to bless them physically. a. Protection in travel b. Healing from injuries and/or illnesses

52 James 5:14,15 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

53 What Should We Ask for Others?
2. We ask God to bless them physically. a. Protection in travel b. Healing from injuries and/or illnesses c. We are also obligated to meet the needs of the needy ourselves as God enables us.

54 James 2:15-17 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

55 Galatians 6:10 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

56 What Should We Ask for Others?
3. We ask God to bless them spiritually. a. Forgiveness

58 Acts 7:60 60 Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

59 Daniel 9:1-3 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans-- 2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. 3 Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

60 What Should We Ask for Others?
3. We ask God to bless them spiritually. a. Forgiveness Identify with the sin.

61 Daniel 9:4-6 4 And I prayed to the Lord my God, and made confession, and said, “O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, 5 we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. 6 “Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land.”

62 What Should We Ask for Others?
3. We ask God to bless them spiritually. a. Forgiveness Identify with the sin. Accept the shame of the sin.

63 Daniel 9:7,8 7 “O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day--to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You. 8 “O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.

64 What Should We Ask for Others?
3. We ask God to bless them spiritually. a. Forgiveness Identify with the sin. Accept the shame of the sin. Admit the sin and the rightness of its condemnation.

65 Daniel 9:9-11 9 “To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him. 10 “We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. 11 “Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him.

66 Daniel 9:12,13 12 “And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster; for under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem. 13 “As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth.

67 Daniel 9:14,15 14 “Therefore the Lord has kept the disaster in mind, and brought it upon us; for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works which He does, though we have not obeyed His voice. 15 “And now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and made Yourself a name, as it is this day--we have sinned, we have done wickedly!

68 What Should We Ask for Others?

69 Daniel 9:16,17 16 “O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all those around us. 17 “Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord's sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate.

70 Daniel 9:18,19 18 “O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. 19 “O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”

72 Daniel 9:20,21 20 Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God, 21 yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.

73 Matthew 7:3-5 3 “And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 “Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.”
