PROJECT 1
NATURE INSTALLATION ART (Group works) 10%
The term installation art is used to describe large - scale, mixed-media constructions, often designed for a specific place or for a temporary period of time. Installation is a form of conceptual art - a genre in which "ideas" and "impact" are regarded as being more important than the quality of a finished "product" or "work of art".

Installation artists are more concerned with the presentation of their message than with the material used to present it. However, unlike 'pure' conceptual art, which is supposedly experienced in the minds of those introduced to it, installation art is more grounded and remains tied to a physical space. For this project, students are to combine the idea of play with nature into the installation art to create unique experience where plants and nature can grow around or within its structural elements.
______________________________________________________________________ Learning Objectives To study the local installation art in Malaysia or around the world through Google search from different location and purposes by collecting relevant information such as design concept, ideas of design, materials and structural studies and etc. from the respective artists/designer for preparing the coming studio project. Students also need to study and collect information on plants, vegetation and other natural elements such as stones, soil, water and etc. These nature installation art studies will help students by understanding physical, perceptual and conceptual elements and orders of Architecture: Movement through order of spaces. Learning Outcomes CLO1: Transform perception of a space through 3-dimensional installation works. CLO3: Present design work through manual drawings and CADD, illustrative graphics and physical models. CLO4: Demonstrate interpersonal skill and leadership through group works. ____________________________________________________________________________ Task 1. In a group of 4 or 5, you will need to design a 3D nature installation artwork. 2. Each group will need to divide the task accordingly, example tasks: precedent study, mockup model, presentation boards and physical model etc. 3. Consider factors influencing product design such as cost, selection of materials production methods, safety and the environment. 4. The nature installation artwork can be in the form of stand alone or walk through artwork. It should be located outdoor. Tunku Abdul Rahman University College

5. The size of the installation art should be not more 9sqm and height not more than 3000mm. 6. The material for the installation art has to be a balance mixture of natural material and man-made material. 7. All ideas, design, development and process should be compiled in butter paper and digitalize it into softcopy. Mock-up models should be built to show the style, size, shape, mechanism, configuration of components and general appearance of the Nature Installation Art. 8. Prepare hand drawn presentation sketches showing style, size, shape, configuration of components and general appearance of products.
______________________________________________________________________ Submission Requirement 1. All design ideas; conceptual drawings, presentation drawings, pictures or other visuals should be present in A2 size presentation boards, properly titled, showing all the required information. 2. Students need to come out with a physical model as a final model (scale to be decide). *Any other relevant size to suit your design intention may be suggested as long as can show types of material and jointing system used.

PROJECT 2
RETREAT STUDIO (Individual + Group works) 85%
Learning Objectives To expose students on the Architectural habitable space with emphasis on forms, spaces, orders, structure and architectural detailing and apply it on the design of a two storey residential building or equivalent. On completion of this course, students should be able to analyse given site conditions and relevant precedent buildings and respond appropriately; develop conceptual ideas and design brief systematically in response to a two storey building design and environmental consideration; generate design proposal through analysis, aesthetically and functionally in context with the general environment; present design work through drawings, both manual and CADD, illustrative graphics and models.

Learning Outcomes CLO2: Produce design proposals for a 2-storey building through precedent study, schematic proposal, and design development according to design brief. CLO3: Present design work through manual drawings and CADD, illustrative graphics and physical models. CLO4: Demonstrate interpersonal skill and leadership through group works. CLO5: Carry out reflective evaluation at the end of each stage and plan for improvement in next stage. CLO6: Apply managerial skill in managing the process of building design. ____________________________________________________________________________ Task You will need to prepare a design proposal for a local art artist (painter/illustrator/ sculptor/digital artist etc.) who decided to build a retreat studio for his/her family. It is expected that the residence will be in two storey retreat studio. The total gross floor area shall not exceed 200sqm with the capacity of 2 to 4 persons. This retreat studio will also serve as a place where this local art artist can rejuvenate from the busy life in the city with his/her family. The residence will have several functional spaces, e.g. living space, kitchen, bathroom and etc. The retreat studio should also be a place where the artist can temporarily work on his/her art project and able to display his/her collection of artworks. Stage I: Precedent Studies – Group Work (5%) Students will be assigned in a group of 4 or 5 for this task, each group will need: • To select ONE (1) two storey retreat house in Malaysia or abroad as a precedent study (timber construction is highly suggested). Each group is to select a different residence. • To study in detail the space planning, form, space and order/ defining elements in architectural design features, material used of the selected residence. Submission: 1. All groups have to present the project findings by using A2 presentation boards.

2. Computerised composition is allowed for this project except for sketches. Stage II: Site Analysis – Group Work (5%) With the same grouping in previous task, students will need to conduct: A site visit: The site is located in a residential area in Seksyen 8, Shah Alam, Selangor. The proposed site is located nearby to Taman Wetland Shah Alam and between Jalan Jaluran 8/3 and Jalan Monsun 8/6.

Proposed Site Each group to pick two (2) sub topic below and conduct site analysis based on these categories: 1. History and background of the site (historical and current) 2. Authority Requirement and UBBL 3. Site Plan, Site Section, Site topography, Setbacks and Zoning 4. Site photograph, Images, Inventory of Adjacent Building and Landmarks 5. Utilities (Water supply, electricity, sewerage, etc) 6. Vehicular and Pedestrian Traffic Flow Analysis (Accessibility) 7. Natural Elements, Climatic and Environmental Contexts (flooding, tides, etc) 8. Socio Cultural Conditions (Background and current) 9. Sensory (Richness) + SWOT Analysis 10. Digital / Physical Site Model & Video of Site Model Submission: •A2-size drawings consisting of: Analysis of the site with diagrams, sketches, photographs and etc. Tunku Abdul Rahman University College

Stage III: Conceptual Design Proposal – Individual (25%) • • • • •
To select a local art artist and study detail on the artist’s information and works. Your chosen artist should produce one of these category of art for example painting, sculpture, weaving, pottery, digital art and etc. Each student to do background study on: artist style, artwork, character, etc. To conceptualize the design of the retreat studio. To finalize the conceptual design proposal by preparing the necessary drawings and models.
Please take note on the following design requirements for the retreat studio: •
•
• • • • •
The retreat shall be only in timber construction. - Wet areas (toilet and kitchen) and footings for foundation are allowed to use concrete/ brick. Only pitch roof is allowed in building design. - Roof coverage material can use clay tile, wood shingles or composite wood. The building shall be in simple post & beam, short span design. The building shall be on two storey floors. The gross floor area of the retreat house shall be approximately 200sqm. Services of cold water supply shall be integrated in to the design of the building. Design of hard landscape and soft landscape shall blend well with the respective retreat studio.
Submission: • A2 size manual conceptual drawings comprising site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, perspectives (of both interior and exterior) and a write-up of your design concept (including the relevant conceptual sketches to help illustrate your design process). • An architectural conceptual study model (1:75 or to be decide later) of the building for the proposed retreat studio (only building, site not required).
