Greetings from Supervisor Haubert

Dear Friends,

With Halloween and Día de los Muertos around the corner, I hope everyone is gearing up for a fun and safe weekend full of family, friends, and celebration! Election Day 2022 is also fast approaching, so look for your ballots in the mail. Make sure your ballot is either postmarked on or before November 8 or submitted at a ballot drop box by 8 PM on November 8. Every vote counts, so please encourage your family and friends to make their voices heard! Click here for all election-related questions.

As always, if there is anything that my office can do to assist you regarding County-specific matters, please feel free to reach out at  bosdist1@acgov.org.

Sincerely,

Eviction Moratorium Town Hall

g

My office recently held a town hall to discuss the financial, emotional, and psychological toll the eviction moratorium has had on our County’s landlords. The stories we heard were heartbreaking. While nearly everyone on the call could attest to tens of thousands of dollars of unpaid rent, the impact the moratorium has had on our residents’ quality of life was most compelling.

While we do not currently have the votes to place this matter on an agenda for discussion, please understand that I am doing everything I can to educate my colleagues on the suffering this is causing our community. In the meantime, please ask every landlord you know that is suffering from the moratorium to submit their testimony to our email at tellDistrict1@acgov.org, and also fill out the Alameda County Rental Arrears Survey.

Please share the above recording of our townhall with your networks so we can show the community the effects this moratorium is having on our landlords, our economy, and our quality of life.

COVID-19 Relief

h

In response to COVID-19, Alameda County launched the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Supervisorial District Community Needs Cash Aid Grants program. The fourth round of District 1 ARPA grants has provided much-needed relief to the local businesses and non-profits featured above. For information on how to apply, click  here!

“Thanks to the leadership of Supervisor Haubert and his dedicated staff, our community has able to quickly rebound from COVID-19. On behalf of the Tri-Valley’s Jewish community, we thank the Supervisor for being the conduit for this blessing.”

- Rabbi Raleigh Resnick

I was also happy to award an ARPA grant to Strizzi's, one of the oldest, most successful restaurants on Downtown Pleasanton's Main Street. Apart from being a historical monument to our community, Strizzi's has traditionally offered generous donations of free food to local schools and other nonprofit organizations. Even at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when the restaurant was shut down, Strizzi's continued giving to our community members in need.

Fremont State of the County

g

On October 12, I gave a State of the County Address to the Fremont Chamber of Commerce. Thank you to Cindy Bonior, President of the Chamber, for organizing and hosting this event. Keeping our business leaders informed on the County's work is a top priority, but this event was also a fantastic opportunity to hear from you. I look forward to working with the Fremont business community to strengthen our local economy.

2nd Annual District 1 Diwali Celebration

d

Thank you to our Indo American and Hindu organizations for allowing me to host the 2nd Annual District 1 Diwali Celebration! Diwali is a festival of lights during which celebrants light diyas, small oil lamps, place them around the home, and pray for knowledge, peace, and universal well-being. Diwali signifies a special time of peace and serenity with the hope of building bridges of understanding and tearing down barriers of intolerance.

USOAC Healthy Living Festival

i

United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County (USOAC) held their 19th Annual Healthy Living Festival at the Oakland Zoo. The event promoted health and wellness for our County's seniors, and featured physical activities, great music, and resources aimed at improving overall quality of life. My staff and I were thrilled to see so many happy faces, as Supervisor Miley and the USOAC organized yet another fantastically successful event.

International Walk and Roll to School Day

j

On October 12, Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) invited me to participate in the International Walk and Roll to School Day. The purpose of the event is to encourage families to walk, bike, carpool, and take transit to school. I was inspired to see so many families enjoying the morning with their kids, exercising, and doing their part to reduce our carbon footprints!

David Delivers

j

A single father and his 14-year-old daughter received keys to their first stable housing in a long time on Tuesday, October 11, 2022!  This family had been living in their SUV for over a year in Livermore.  Our District 1 Tri-Valley Community Liaison, Gloria Gregory, was introduced to the father by Livermore School District staff in early May.  From the date of that meeting, housing and continued connection with community services for the family became a focus for my office. Those services included the Tri-Valley Career Center, Tri-Valley Seek & Save, CityServe of the Tri-Valley, Cornerstone Fellowship, Tri-Valley Haven, Eden Housing and the City of Livermore.

Gloria worked closely with the father to submit a housing application, and after several weeks, the family was chosen for the apartment. This collaborative effort gives us hope as we continue working together to relieve unhoused Tri-Valley residents of housing insecurity.

Tri-Valley Air Quality Community Alliance

i

The Tri-Valley Air Quality Community Alliance (TVAQCA) has released a newsletter highlighting many fascinating initiatives to improve our local air quality. Sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the TVAQCA works with local leaders, advisors, scientists, and engineers to develop science-based insight and solutions.

Within the Margins

o

As part of her District 1 Internship project, Vivian Liu has been on the ground interviewing our County's unhoused residents to share their stories with the community. From COVID-19 job loss to unforeseen family tragedies, the stories illustrated in Vivian's blog express how close we all could come to losing our homes. Within the Margins not only humanizes the community members suffering from the homelessness crisis, but it also offers relief to those in need.

I encourage you to read Vivian's blog and donate to a Go Fund Me campaign to assist an unhoused educator right here in Alameda County.

Fremont Police Department would like to hear from you! Your valuable feedback will help improve services and identify primary concerns our community would like to address. We want to know how we can best serve you!  Complete our annual Community Survey by October 31, 2022.

The City is starting the process of creating a short-term rental (STR) ordinance for Fremont. An STR refers to an activity in which a “host” agrees to rent out all or a portion of a residential unit to a “guest” for less than 30 consecutive nights. The new ordinance would continue to allow STRs to operate in Fremont but would adopt regulations that fit the characteristics of the city and preserve community character. Click here for more info.
