The Doctor’s Bag Icon
Ardens is very easy to use. “Start a consultation” in the normal way. Then click on the doctor’s bag icon and you’re then ready to go.
Click on which ever system you want to log the problem. You can even log more than one problem in the right clinical system without having to start a new consultation or a ‘new problem’ each time.
Remember, you can draw onto the medical drawings
For prescribing, use the PILL icon, not the MEDICINE BOTTLE icon. The PILL icon – lets you do both repeats and acutes. You can see allergies at a glance. You can see all current repeats. You can right click on any repeat item and amend or delete it.

Prescribing

You can right click on any repeat item and amend or delete it. I know it looks a bit busy at first, but you soon get used to it.
Use the disease icons
You don’t need to use the doctor’s bag for every consultation. You can use the disease icons to record a problem that is already known.
For example, if a known diabetic comes in for a consultation about their diabetes. Hit the relevant disease icon beneath their name (in this example, d for diabetes). From there, you can do all sorts – record information, see past HbA1Cs, and it even guides you on the prescribing ladder if you are unsure what to do next. There are disease icons for COPD, asthma, Learning Disabilities, and lots more.
Autoconsultations for leaflets, diaries, formularies, scores, minor surgery, coils
Main important areas are…
- Diaries and leaflets eg blood pressure monitoring, peak flows, leaflets not just from patient.co.uk but ARC too etc
- Formularies – gives good protocols like acne 1st line, 2nd line etc
- Scores – like Epworth, PHQ9 etc
- Procedures – for those who do minor surgery or implants/coils
QoF & Templates
QoF Items
- If you see a red star next to anything – it is a QoF item.
- If you are looking for a QoF item and you’re finding it difficult to find – then look for the red star little icon at the bottom right – where the PILL icon is. Click on it if it is there.
QoF Health Check
Don’t miss out on the QOF Health Check, Best Practice and Contract reports too, just go to Clinical Reporting > Ardens and see www.ardens.org.uk/qof-health-check .
- The location is Reporting > Clinical Reporting > Arden’s Ltd > Missed Income > QoF
- Remember to select all items under Missed Income>QoF (use CTRL A) and then RUN them (click green arrow).
Templates – you don’t have to fill in every empty box. Only fill in what you were planning to do and consider other boxes ONLY if you have the time or if it is relevant
Referrals, Letters & Forms
If you just click the orange arrow icon under the patient’s name, this should open up the ‘Communications – Bradford and Districts’ template. Physio, USS and Radiology in the favourites bit. Autofills.
On most consultation templates is a link to the ‘Med3 & Letters’ template. This has got various useful letters including a link to print out a ESA113 in the top right.

To correct a QoF Read-Code
- Open patient record as normal
- To add the correct diagnosis read code, go to Autoconsultations > Ardens Contracts > QOF
- Remember to back date the read code to the date of actual diagnosis
