In this post, you’ll learn the word ‘levitate’ and its meaning.
If you levitate, you rise in the air without any physical support or force.
In order to levitate, you have to be an astronaut or a magician (whatever you prefer).
Astronauts levitate while in space. They levitate because there’s no gravity there. We can also say that they float in weightlessness.
Magicians can levitate things in the air.
Birds can levitate in the air without moving their wings but it’s different from flying when they wave their wings.
Levitate: Meaning in Dua Lipa’s Song
I came across ‘levitate’ in Dua Lipa’s song ‘Levitating’.
She sings about meeting someone special and inviting him for a “ride in the galaxy.” She’s so happy that she’s levitating. So Dua Lipa uses the word ‘levitate’ in a figurative rather than a literal way.
Here’s the line:
You want me, I want you, baby
My sugarboo, I’m levitating
The Milky Way is liberating
Yeah, yeah, yeah
At the same time, if you watch the video, you’ll see that cosmic theme present there. She levitates and travels in space.
